Morocco I

As a predominantly Muslim country, Islam is deeply ingrained in Moroccan culture, influencing in daily life, from the call to prayer to the stunning mosques and monuments. Morocco also boasts a rich history of Islamic scholarship. As we explore historic mosques, learn about Islamic traditions, and engage in cultural exchanges we understand the relationship Moroccans have with Islam, and how the philosophical tenets of the religion overlap with many other spiritual traditions around the globe.

Day 1

Upon arrival in Casablanca, we journey to Rabat, Morocco’s capital. Following lunch, we convene for an itinerary workshop where we establish a full-value contract and discuss health and safety protocols. After dinner, we enjoy a game of soccer on the picturesque beaches of Rabat as the sun sets.

Day 2

We learn Survival Arabic, traditional calligraphy, and Moroccan culture. After lunch with local students, we explore Kasbah des Oudayas, engaging in conversations with residents. The day concludes with a rooftop discussion and dinner with university students, enjoying Moroccan music and dance.

Day 3

We explore historic sites like Tour Hassan and the Mausoleum of Mohammed V. Then, we visit Chellah, an ancient archaeological site. In the afternoon, we meet the Democratic Association of Moroccan Women learning about women's rights advocacy. Later, we settle in with our homestay hosts.

Day 4

After breakfast, students head to CCCL (an Envoys partner association) for a first impressions workshop. Then, we start a scavenger hunt in the medina. In the afternoon, we meet policymakers at the United Nations Development Program. We end the day with outings with our host families.

Day 5

After breakfast, we head to Fes, stopping at an organic farm run by a Berber entrepreneur. Thariq guides us through organic challenges, and we try goat milking and cheese making. After lunch, we hike through villages, then continue to Fes for dinner and entertainment.

Day 6

In Fes, we explore the bustling medina, renowned for its tanneries, artisans, and markets. After lunch, we tour Al-Qarawiyyin University, founded in 857 AD. Then, we meet local students to discuss education and personal development, comparing perspectives between Morocco and the US.

Day 7

We engage with students at the American School of Fes. After lunch, we explore the medinas and iconic landmarks, discussing Fes's intellectual importance and civil society's role. In the afternoon, we visit Bou Inania Madrasa and the Chouara Tannery, followed by dinner in a historic riad.

Day 8

We board a bus to Tazekka National Park, established in 1950 to preserve Jbel Tazekka's natural resources. We hike, have a picnic lunch, do a citizen science activity, and reflect on our program during a workshop.

Day 9

We leave Fes by train for Meknes. We visit the Mausoleum of Moulay Isma'il and the Qara Prison, both historic sites. Students explore Meknes' souks before enjoying mint tea and people-watching in Lahdim Square. Then, we board our train to Casablanca for a final celebratory dinner.

Day 10

On our last day, we visit the seaside Hassan II Mosque, one of the few mosques in Morocco that non-Muslims may enter, and then visit the beach of Aïn Diab to fly kites, splash in the waves, and conduct our program closing ceremony. After a picnic lunch, we head to the airport for our flights home.

UNDERSTANDING CONTEMPORARY ISLAM

Contemporary Islam in Morocco is diverse and complex, deeply ingrained in society and politics. Sufism, emphasizing a personal connection with God, coexists with conservative interpretations. Despite government promotion of moderate Islam, religious practices vary widely across the country.

POST-COLONIAL LEGACIES

French colonial rule in Morocco imposed authority, exploited resources, and excluded Moroccans from politics. Despite resistance, colonialism deeply shaped Moroccan society. Post-independence, Morocco faced challenges in asserting identity and addressing inequality linked to colonial legacy.

CROSS-CULTURAL CONNECTION

Morocco's rich history of cross-cultural connections stems from its role as a gateway between Europe and Africa, fostering trade and diverse traditions. Influences from Berbers, Arabs, and Andalusians, alongside colonial legacies, shape its vibtant culture that attracts millions of tourists anually.
