The Path Within: A Mind-Body Journey on the Camino de Santiago
El Camino de Santiago, Spain
The Camino de Santiago, a Christian pilgrimage for over 1,000 years, has pre-Christian roots. Also known as the Way of Saint James, it gained recognition by the 12th century. Today, over 200,000 people annually walk the Camino, driven by diverse spiritual motivations. Beyond institutional religiosity, a trend of 'personal pilgrimage' prevails, fostering self-awareness, mourning, and spiritual growth. Our program begins with this lens, exploring the sociology of pilgrimage, Medieval Catholicism, and the formation of Spiritual and Religious Identity.
“Pilgrims' footsteps echo, cathedral spires reach for the heavens, Santiago's embrace is a journey's end and a spiritual beginning.“
-
“Stone streets whisper ancient prayers, the Camino's tales converge, Santiago de Compostela beckons with the pilgrimage of the soul.“

Day 1
Students depart for international flights. Greeted by Envoys educators, they check into accommodations and engage in a safety briefing, and a group dynamic activity. From there, we head out to explore the surrounding area and have a welcome dinner together, sampling Spanish cuisine.
Day 2
We take a multi-hour train ride and enjoy the Spanish countryside. Upon arrival, we have lunch and explore town. In the afternoon, we review everyone's gear and clothing, with a packing workshop. Before dinner, we do our pilgrimage Full Value Contract Workshop.
Day 3
We settle into daily life on El Camino. We sleep in the classic Albergues, spend our mornings walking, and have picnics on trail or upon arrival in town for lunch. We spend our afternoons in a variety of ways. On the final day, we arrive at Santiago de Compostela!
Day 4
We spend the day relishing in our accomplishment, celebrating each other, and visiting a number of holy pilgrimage sites to pay homage to this beautiful trail and all it has given humanity.
Day 5
After a big breakfast on some final trinket shopping in town, we board the train back to Madrid in order to catch our flights home.
Lenses of Inquiry
Sense of Place
Students explore the concept of place, and what it means to them, through immersive experiences, engaging all senses. With an emphasis on building connections, empathy, and understanding diverse narratives. The focus is on getting to know real people. Daily walking meditations help them discover their own sense of place and purpose.
Spiritual and Sacredness
Students explore diverse spiritual and religious identities along the Camino through media, text, and empathy interviews. As they walk, a tapestry of understanding about religious identity unfolds, prompting a personal reflection on spirituality and what it means to them.
Pilgrimage Culture
Students explore the unique empathic and community-based culture on El Camino, understanding how culture arises from place and shared experience. Through daily reflections and interactions, they discover the power of shared experiences in supportive cultures.
