Harmony or Conflict? Sacred Ecosystems and Community Development in the Galapagos
Galapagos I
The Galapagos Islands boast unparalleled and endangered biodiversity, offering a unique, once-in-a-lifetime experience. Situated off Ecuador's coast, this archipelago is renowned for its distinct wildlife, including giant tortoises, marine iguanas, and blue-footed boobies. However, alongside this rich ecosystem, a human population engages in fishing, tourism, and economic development endeavors. The challenge lies in balancing conservation interests with community development on the islands.
“Blue-footed boobies dance and ancient tortoises roam, nature's laboratory unfolds, a living testament to the wonders of evolution.“
-
“A reminder of the delicate dance between creatures and their environment.“

Day 1
Students arrive to Baltra, travel to Puerto Ayora, stopping to admire “Los Gemelos” craters. Upon arrival, we review Island regulations and safety protocols. We visit the Plaza Islands for a tour, swimming, and exploration of the Marine Ecosystem and visit a local market to sample new snacks.
Day 2
Students visit a farm near a tortoise-populated trail for an unfiltered, awe-inspiring encounter. Afterwards, they explore the Charles Darwin Research Institute and Tortoise Breeding Center and interview park rangers and conservationists to gain diverse perspectives on Galapagos conservation.
Day 3
We immerse ourselves in a service project at Lava Java coffee farm, learning about harvesting and supply chain challenges. Later, we explore Galapagos Centro de Energia Renovable and join the NASA GLOBE Observer program as Citizen Scientists, aiding scientists studying Earth and the environment.
Day 4
We take a two hour boat trip from Santa Cruz to Isabela where students continue their research for the NASA GLOBE Observers project. In the evening, we explore the town, engaging in communication interactions with local people, and trying local foods.
Day 5
After our daily Citizen Science Research briefing, we transfer each morning to a different snorkeling spot, mapping the area and enjoying lunch on the beach. Guided by our expert, we search for penguins and sea turtles. Afternoon workshops in cooking or art precede dinner and a food culture session.
