The Meeting Point
Marseille
International programs for teachers in Marseille
Marseille
Introduction Marseille is not the France of postcards. It is gritty, vibrant, loud, and undeniably real. As the oldest city in France and its primary gateway to the Mediterranean, Marseille has always been a city of arrivals. It is a ""salad bowl"" where the Global North meets the Global South, creating a unique urban tapestry that is both harmonious and fractured. For educators, Marseille is the ultimate classroom for studying identity and belonging. As part of our professional development for educators in Marseille, this experience becomes a powerful model of educational travel for teachers in Marseille seeking depth over tourism. In a world increasingly polarized by borders and narratives of ""us vs. them,"" this city forces us to confront the complexities of integration. It challenges us to look beyond the surface of a multicultural society and ask the hard questions: How do diverse communities truly co-exist? How do we find beauty in the grit? And how do we teach our students to navigate a world that is messy, complex, and beautiful? This educator program is not a tour; it is an investigation into the soul of a port city and one of the most transformative immersion programs for teachers in Europe. By walking the streets of Noailles, hiking the limestone Calanques, and debating in the shadow of Notre-Dame de la Garde, we will strip away our own biases and rebuild our capacity for empathy, global competence training for teachers, and courageous dialogue.

Highlights of the Program
Starts at $3,050 USD (land price)
June 25th To July 1st. 2026.
The Moral North at Notre-Dame
We begin our journey by ascending to the Basilica of Notre-Dame de la Garde for an opening circle. From the city's highest vantage point, we will define our ""Moral North"" and re-evaluate our educational mission within the framework of international education consulting for schools and leadership development.
The Migration Walk & Radical Empathy:
Traverse the neighborhoods of Noailles and Belsunce alongside local community leaders.
The Resilience of Stone:
Engage in a silent hike and a cold-water swim in the Calanques National Park. This physical experience serves as a metaphor to explore the critical difference between professional endurance and true resilience.
Civic Voice & Street Art:
Participate in collaborative workshops with urban artists at La Friche la Belle de Mai to explore art as a tool for voice and rebellion.
The Courageous Protocol:
The program culminates in the design of a concrete protocol for facilitating difficult conversations in the classroom.
RELATING & THINKING (purpose, complexity awareness, and moral courage)
Day 1
Arrival & Acclimatization ThemeThe Moral NorthTheme: Arrival & Perspective We arrive in Marseille, a city of light and wind. After settling in, we ascend immediately to the city’s highest point: Notre-Dame de la Garde. Overlooking the sprawling port and the shimmering Mediterranean, we hold our Opening Circle: ""The Moral North."" Here, high above the noise, we orient ourselves not just geographically, but ethically. We define our ""Lenses of Inquiry"" and set the container for a week of vulnerability and rigor characteristic of high-impact immersion programs for teachers. Evening: Welcome Dinner near the Old Port.
Day 2
Beauty & GritTheme: Sitting with Complexity We begin at MUCEM (Museum of European and Mediterranean Civilizations), exploring the historical narratives of the Mediterranean basin. But museums only tell half the story. We venture into the streets to find examples where beauty and grit co-exist side by side. We challenge the teacher’s instinct to provide ""answers."" We unpack this over dinner, learning to appreciate the unresolved tension of the city through the lens of global citizenship education for educators.
Day 3
The Invisible CityTheme: Unconscious Bias We leave the tourist track for Noailles and Belsunce, neighborhoods often stigmatized as ""immigrant quarters"" or ""unsafe."" Guided by a local community leader, we walk these streets to see the vibrant, tight-knit communities that thrive here. In the afternoon, we engage in a facilitated dialogue on unconscious bias as part of our global competence training for teachers. We ask the hard question: Who is the 'invisible student' in my class? Who have I labeled and stopped truly 'seeing'? This is a day of unlearning.
Day 4
The Resilience of StoneTheme: From Endurance to Resilience We trade the concrete for limestone, heading to the Calanques National Park. We hike through this rugged, arid landscape that drops dramatically into the turquoise sea. A cold water swim in the Mediterranean. It is a shock to the system, designed to awaken our resilience. We discuss how to shift our professional practice from simply surviving the school year to thriving within it—an essential reflection in teacher training abroad in France.
Day 5
The Art of RebellionTheme: Courageous Conversations We explore La Friche la Belle de Mai, a former tobacco factory turned into a massive cultural playground. It is a symbol of transformation. Later, we head to the Cours Julien, the street art capital of France. Working with local artists, we explore art as a voice for the voiceless, reinforcing the role of educators as facilitators of courageous dialogue.
Day 6
The Citizen EducatorTheme: Integration & Action We start slowly with coffee at the Old Port, watching the fishermen sell their catch—a ritual that has existed for 2,600 years. You will leave with a script and a strategy for when topics like race, migration, or equity explode in your classroom—practical tools aligned with international education consulting for schools and leadership teams. We write our ""Citizen Educator Manifesto,"" a personal commitment to the teacher we want to be next semester. A celebratory Farewell Dinner, toasting to the complexity of the world and our role in it.
Day 7
DepartureTheme: The Return After a final breakfast and Closing Ceremony, we head to the airport. We leave Marseille not just with photos of the sea, but with a sharper eye for inequality, a softer heart for the ""other,"" and the tools to navigate the storms of modern education through transformative educational travel for teachers in Marseille.
